		<description>I would happily use Netbeans, trouble is the big software vendors aren't (IBM, BEA, Oracle) even the smaller software vendors aren't. I don't think the problem is so much Eclipse v. NetBeans I think it is the way the vendors have used them.

I totally agree the NetBeans has a much better story around build scripts than Eclipse. NetBeans uses ant as the first class storage mechanism for build related information.

Has the netbeans story improved around importing legacy scripts?</description>

Check out (if you haven't already) Netbeans. The default projects are ANT through and through and if you decide to use MevenIDe and go Maven then everything is as you;d expect again.  There are no .classpath or .project files and the IDE maps all your standard buttons, menu item,s and shortcuts for you.  Shift-F6 to build?  Sure can.

 

Oh, and wait until you see the new editor, Matisse, Visual Web Pack, JRuby support and much more. Come on, come over from the dark side.  Step into the light...
